The Quantitative analysis of the Methylglyoxal reductase in Porcine tissues by ELISA

Abstract
The methylglyoxal reductase was purified from porcine liver, further characterized and investigated on the amount in tissues by ELISA. The enzyme is 65,000 dalton, consists of two identical 42,000 dalton subunits. This enzyme is NADH dependent and converts methylglyoxal to lactaldehyde. The methylglyoxal reductase is differentiated from the aldose/aldehyde reductase family which is another methylglyoxal reducing enzyme. The aldose/aldehyde reductase family which is NADPH dependent and 38,000 dalton monomer, reduces methylglyoxal to acetol. The result of the amount of methylglyoxal reductase in tissues by ELISA shows that this enzyme is concentrated in liver and kidney, comparatively little in brain, erythrocyte, lung and heart muscle and trace in lens crystalline and skeletal muscle. Because liver and kidney take the xenobiotics metabolism in higher organisms, this result may introduce the possibility that this enzyme is engaged in the protecting system of the organism.
